How to Become a Notary Public in New York

  1. Make sure you fulfill the requirements to be a NY Notary Public (scroll down for State Requirements).
  2. We recommend you first take our New York Notary Online Course ($49.95) to get you prepared for the NY State Notary Public Exam. Alternatively, you can study New York's Notary Public License Law.
  3. Pass the one-hour NY State Notary Exam. The exam is Pass/Fail. Bring $15 and your ID. See the Notary Public Walk-In Examination Schedule and Exam Information.
    • Exam topics include, but are not limited to: license law, general terms and duties of a NY notary public, 
  4. Wait to receive your exam results by mail. 
  5. Once you've passed the exam, submit a completed notary public application with a $60 application fee. Check or money order should be made out to the New York Department of State. 
    • An oath of office must be signed in front of a commissioned NY Notary Public and submitted with your application, as well as your exam results.
  6. Within three to four weeks, you should receive your NY notary ID card.

New York Notary Public Requirements

  1. Submit a complete application and the $60 application fee.
  2. Pass the New York notary public state exam. New York attorneys and court clerks of the UCS do not have to take the exam.
  3. Be a resident of the state of New York and work either in or out of (having a business or office in) New York.
