Resident Illinois Notary Bond
Illinois law requires notaries to purchase and maintain an Illinois notary bond for the duration of their notary commission. Illinois residents are commissioned for a 4-year term; nonresidents are commissioned for a 1-year term. A $5,000 Illinois notary bond is required for notaries who want to perform traditional notarizations, while a $30,000 bond is required for notaries who wish to perform remote or electronic notarizations. The bond protects the public against financial loss due to improper conduct by a notary.
$5,000 Notary Bond – New and renewing notaries seeking to perform traditional, in-person notarizations only must obtain a $5,000 notary bond.
$25,000 Notary Bond – Notaries who have a $5,000 bond and who want to perform remote or electronic notarizations must obtain a $25,000 notary bond.
$30,000 Notary Bond – New and renewing notaries who want to perform traditional, remote, and electronic notarizations must obtain a $30,000 notary bond.
