So I have this friend who wants my notary service to witness the signing of her rental agreement and transaction of the deposit. But not all of the deposit. So my question is, is witnessing a signature for a rental agreement under my notary duties? And if so, will I need to use the Jurat certificate for this legal agreement?

P.S this would be my first notary public job.

You need to ask your friend - does your friend want the rental agreement notarized or just have you witness it.

If just a witness I don't see the problem - this would be you acting as a friend and not a notary - and I doubt there's any law restricting you from acting as a witness - just remember you can't charge for it.

If your friend wants it notarized, then they need to tell you what cert to use - you can't make that call. If they don't know, just explain the difference between a jurat and an acknowledgement and have them pick one - but you can't pick.
