When I tried to notarize a document I was told by the signer that he cannot fill out some of the blank spaces. They must be filled out by someone else and that he'll be sending the form to them later after I notarize the document. He said that I'm only notarizing the spaces that he filled out and his signature so it's okay to still notarize it. Is this okay? Or do I need to tell him to send the document to the other people, have them fill it out, then send it back to him to be notarized?
Whether it's allowed depends on your state. If your state allows it, then you have to decide if you want to go along with it. For something that can't possibly be known at the time of the signing, such as the book and page number a deed will be recorded in the county land records office, it would seem relatively safe. Things that normally would be known at the time the document is signed would be less safe.
Thanks for your reply. This is for California. It usually sounds more like the signer can't fill in the blanks but another person would be able to had they filled out the form before the signer came to me.
